Mobile Restrooms Coming To Denver

DENVER (CBS4)- More restrooms are coming to Denver and the newest addition is on wheels. The mobile restroom will be parked at Clarkson Street and Colfax starting March 7.

The mobile restroom is part of a initiative to meet a growing need for publicly accessible restrooms in the central part of Denver. The City of Denver will evaluate the effectiveness of the Colfax and Clarkson restroom over the next three to six months.

That location was chose based on several factors that include proximity to major pedestrian corridors, points of interest, bus stops, bicycle routes, B-cycle stations, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.

"We have the option of moving this unit to other locations which is partially why we got a mobile unit rather than building some of the fancy permanent units you see in other big cities. We want to make sure we get it right before we invest in something you can't move," said Denver City Councilwoman Robin Kniech.

The mobile unit will have an attendant and three restroom stalls, one that is ADA accessible. The restroom will be open from noon to midnight and moved out of the neighborhood each night for cleaning.

In addition to the mobile unit, the city is reactivating existing public restrooms, has reopened the restroom at Skyline Park last fall and plans to reopen restrooms in Commons Park and at the McNichols Building in Civic Center Park.

"As we continue to create a more vibrant and sustainable city, where people are out walking and biking to their destinations, we must also address the related need for restroom facilities," said Jose Cornejo, Executive Director of Denver Public Works, in a statement. "Providing accessible, comfortable facilities can improve the way our city looks and functions, improve quality of life, and help us keep our streets and alleyways clean."
