2 Young Women Make Daring Escape From Suspect In SWAT Situation

DENVER (CBS4) - A man suspected of attempting to steal a vehicle prompted a SWAT response in Denver after barricading himself in a residence occupied by two women Wednesday afternoon. The women were able to make a daring escape.

Denver police investigated an attempted auto theft in the 1200 block of Mariposa Street just before noon. Shortly after, one male suspect was found to be barricading himself in a home in the 1300 block of Lipan Street.

Two women were inside the home in the middle of Bible study. They told CBS4's Karen Morfitt they first saw a man hop the neighbor's fence but didn't think much of it until they heard what sounded like gun shots at their window.

Breanna Huffman lives at the home. She was there with her friend when they heard the loud banging noise. Unsure what it was, she says they hit the floor and made their way into the bathroom. They hid there until they could hear the man make his way upstairs.

"We knew he was upstairs and while he was upstairs that was the best chance that he wasn't going to see us," Huffman said. "He was definitely going to hear us but he wasn't going to be able to get to us in time to do anything to us."

The SWAT team was called in to negotiate with the suspect, which ended shortly after 2:30 p.m. when the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect's name hasn't been released.
