Mobile Home Fire Proves Challenging For Firefighters In Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A fire swept through a mobile home in Aurora Tuesday morning and firefighters worked quickly to keep it from spreading to other trailers.

Copter4 first spotted the flames during the CBS4 Morning News and was overhead when the flames burst through the roof.

The resident wasn't home when the fire broke out and completely gutted the mobile home. A neighboring home and vehicle only suffered minor damages thanks to quick work by fire crews in a tight space.

"They arrived in approximately five minutes and found that there was indeed a trailer heavily involved in fire and it was exposing the neighboring trailer next door," Lt. Sean Dolan with the Aurora Fire Department said.

An elderly woman breathing with the help of oxygen in the neighboring trailer escaped thanks to her neighbors.

"I tried to get the woman next door because she's handicapped on oxygen and I banged on her windows, couldn't get her up, finally got her up," a neighbor said. "I tried to tell her to give me the keys to her car because the fire was going onto her car, but we couldn't get her car out of there so we left it there," neighbor told CBS4.

"My neighbors are great because that one, right there, woke me up and said, 'There's a fire.' So I jumped up and out my kitchen window I saw, not daylight, not fire, so the first thing I did was turn the oxygen."

For firefighters, the neighborhood presented its fair share of challenges.

"These neighborhoods weren't designed with the fire department and their operations in mind, and the fire department had to overcome many challenges. They did that very quickly and very aggressively and were able to control the fire in a very timely fashion," Dolan said.

Crews had the blaze under control within 20 minutes. They say the fire started on the stove.

The resident who lost his trailer owns another one in the neighborhood and will have a place to stay.
