Crews Control Fire That Caused Rush Hour Road Closure

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A brush fire broke out in warm and windy conditions near the Aurora-Denver line late Monday afternoon.

Emergency officials from Denver and Aurora responded to the fire near the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Havana Street just after 4 p.m.

The initial report was for fast-moving flames and heavy smoke.

"I thought one of these buildings was on fire, so I went to the window and saw the field just completely engulfed in smoke," said Mark Thomas, who was at work across the street.

The fire was estimated to be 2 1/2 acres in size, burning at the CommonGround Golf Course.

The Aurora Fire Department tweeted the fire was under control at approximately 5:20 p.m.

According to the Aurora Fire Department, it took firefighters from the two departments less than an hour to get the blaze under control.

The fast-moving fire sent heavy smoke across Alameda Avenue, which had lanes of traffic shut down at Dayton, but no damage was done to any buildings.

"It was basically impeding traffic from Alameda," said one firefighter.

A Denver firefighter was transported to the hospital due to a sprained knee he sustained while fighting the fire. He has since been released.
