Driver Killed In Collision With Police Vehicle

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) - A collision between a car and a police vehicle early Thursday morning has left one person dead.

At 1:12 a.m., a Westminster Police Department officer was responding to a call of a disturbance with weapons on Federal Boulevard. The officer was heading south on Federal Boulevard as a silver Chevy Malibu was heading north.

That driver tried to turn onto westbound West 88th Avenue from Federal, and was struck by the patrol car.

The man driving the sedan was killed in the collision and the officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The North Metro Accident Investigation Team is investigating the accident, and have determined the officer's patrol car lights and siren were on at the time of the crash.

"So the Adams County investigation team which is comprised of officers from outside agencies other than Westminster basically re-creates the accident from just before the end of the accident to the end of it so that's what they're in the process of doing," Westminster police investigator Cheri Spottke told CBS4 News. "This is going to take some time for this magnitude of an accident."

The intersection was closed for much of the morning, and the two cars were towed away by 6:45 a.m.

Federal was fully reopened by 6:45 a.m., though delays had already built up for morning rush hour traffic.
