A Colorado Company Is Shining A Light On Pain Relief

By Kathy Walsh

DENVER (CBS) - A Colorado startup has gotten into the pain relief business. The company, BioCare Systems, Inc., has developed an over-the-counter device called LumiWave.

The device is Food and Drug Administration cleared and portable. It is powered by infrared light. The developers promise when it comes to easing pain they are on your wavelength.

"I wish I found it years ago," said customer Nancy Colebank of Highlands Ranch.

Nine months ago, she had sharp, lingering pain following knee replacement surgery. Rather than turn to pills, Colebank tried LumiWave.

"I just feel like the pain that I'm feeling goes away. It makes me move my knee better," said Colebank.

According to the company website, LumiWave produces the same therapeutic light energy as a low-level infrared laser. But it does it using four LED-powered pods that can be draped on or fastened around any body ache.

Colebank said, "It's very simple to use, very easy to use."

"Our whole premise was make this something that can be used at home," co-inventor Sherry Fox of Parker told CBS4 Health Specialist Kathy Walsh.

Fox is the cofounder and chairs the board of Biocare Systems, Inc. She said LumiWave was 10 years in the making.

"There are 49 infrared LEDs inside each one of these pods," said Fox.

She explained the temperature controlled heat from the patented LED technology gets to the deep tissue.

"By the FDA we can promise that it is pain relief and that it is temporary. What we are hoping to prove with some clinical trials is that it is actually accelerating healing," said Fox.

Colebank is already convinced. She even uses the device to help her little dog, Lucky.

"There's no side effect whatsoever, the only side effect is pain relief," said Colebank.

Fox said LumiWave has been used by Olympic athletes and pro teams, including the Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos.

Right now you can order it on line at www.lumiwave.com. Fox hopes it will be sold in the Brookstone catalog in the next few months. The cost for a single version LumiWave is $299.
