Along With The Snow Come The Potholes

By Tom Mustin

DENVER (CBS4) - Monday's steady snowstorm dropped several inches of snow across the Denver metro area.

Snowplows worked overtime, trying to stay ahead of the storm. The Colorado Department of Transportation had 86 plows metro-wide, slated to work nonstop through Tuesday if necessary.

"Swerving -- swerving back and forth," said driver Simone Chavous.

Monday afternoon, traffic backed up for miles on Interstate 225 in Aurora after a minivan spun out on a patch of ice and slammed into a guard rail. CDOT says about 40 accidents were reported across the metro area, none of them serious.

CDOT and Denver Public Works crews hit every major metro road. CDOT laid down mag chloride to combat snow accumulation.

"It's s kind of funneling slower. It's going to be long," driver Chauncey Burgett told CBS4's Tom Mustin.

Burgett came down from Montana and noticed another problem caused by Mother Nature.

"I was giving somebody a ride down. I hit a line of potholes. Aaaah! My side was okay. He got it pretty bad," laughed Burgett.

Traffic crept to a standstill after a series of potholes opened up on I-70 near Havana Street.

As metro drivers trudged through the icy streets, Burgette grudgingly gave Colorado its due.

"No, you guys got good snow here, that's the main thing," he said.
