Man Sentenced For Killing 2 Women Inside His Apartment
DENVER (CBS4)- A man found guilty of shooting and killing two women inside his apartment in Denver has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
A judge handed down the sentence to Jose King, 24, in Denver District Court on Friday. The judge ordered two consecutive life terms, one for each of the women King killed.
In October 2014, King shot his roommate, Amanda Anders, 19, and her friend, Nancy Worrell, 22, killing both women.
The shooting happened after an argument, King said. He stepped over their bodies to flee the scene and later told police he "did a bad thing."
In victim impact statements to the judge, family and friends remembered the women as bright and full of life. They spoke of the pain they've endured since the women's murders. Dozens of people attended the hearing wearing pink scarves and clothing and buttons with Worrell's photo on them.
Worrell was attending culinary school to become a chef and hoped to one day open her own business. Her mother told the judge her daughter "lived life out loud" and "she made things fun."
Steven Anders told the judge of his daughter's aspirations to become an art teacher, "She really wanted to teach people how to draw, how to express themselves through drawing. That was her passion."
"I want her remembered a free spirit, a girl that drove to get all of her accomplishments," said Anders.
Anders says he is satisfied with the sentence but fears an ongoing court battle, as King's attorneys indicated plans to appeal.
"I'm grateful it's over, even though it truly isn't," Anders said. "This is something we've got to live with for a very long time, for the rest of our lives."
