Jeffco Sheriff To Aurora Officers: 'Thanks For Taking Care Of Our Guy'

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - As the Jefferson County deputy who was seriously injured in a shooting on Tuesday recovers, his boss says he's thankful to the police who quickly came to his aid.

The deputy, who has not been identified, was off duty and visiting his girlfriend in Aurora when he was shot in an apparent attempted robbery. One of two suspects remains at large in the case.

Sheriff Jeff Shrader says the deputy, who has been with the department for more than 10 years, is "an exceptional person and an exceptional employee."

As of Wednesday night, he had been through two successful surgeries, and his girlfriend's family says there are likely more to come.

In an interview with CBS4 on Wednesday, Shrader commended the quick actions of police officers following the shooting, particularly the officer who rode in the ambulance with the injured deputy.

"What I wanted to express to him and to everybody else in the Aurora Police Department, thanks for taking care of our guy," Shrader said.

The deputy was approached by two males wearing masks in the parking lot of the apartment building. He managed to shoot back during the gunfight and injured one of the two criminals. That person, a juvenile, was captured but the other male was not found despite an extensive search.

The suspect who is at large is considered armed and dangerous, and the only description that has been released is that he was black and was wearing a brown coat.

A reward of $6,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
