Bighorn Sheep Found With Head Removed

KREMMLING, Colo. (CBS4) - A Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep was found last week southwest of Kremmling deceased and with its head removed.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers believe the ram died over the previous weekend, but said the head was removed and taken from the scene.

CPW is asking for the public's help in their investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact District Wildlife Manager of Kremmling, Rachel Sralla, at 970-531-2445.

Sralla said investigators have found evidence at the scene and are searching for additional clues, as well as tips from the public.

"We are working to fill in the gaps in the information we have and will continue to investigate the incident," said Sralla.

Although meat can be kept from most roadkill wildlife if reported to CPW within 48 hours, the horns of bighorn sheep or mountain goat, trophy-quality antlers from deer, elk or moose, and hides and skulls from mountain lions or bears cannot be kept.

If officers determine the bighorn sheep's head was taken illegally, Operation Game Thief will provide a $1000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to a citation or an arrest.
