Jefferson County Deputy In Serious Condition After Getting Shot

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Aurora are investigating a shooting of an off-duty Jefferson County deputy that occurred Tuesday evening.

According to police, the shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. 17300 block of Adriatic Drive.

According to police, the deputy, whose name hasn't been released, was exiting his personal vehicle when he was approached by more than one suspect wearing masks. The son of the deputy's girlfriend told CBS4's Kelly Werthmann the deputy attempted to show the suspects his badge and was shot multiple times in the chest and stomach.

After being shot the deputy was able to reach for his gun and shoot one of the juvenile suspects who was hit in the leg and taken to the hospital.

The deputy was conscious as he was being taken to the hospital. He was originally listed in critical condition by the sheriff's office and Aurora police but he's now listed in serious condition.

The girlfriend's son believes it was an attempted robbery.

Police were searching the area for the other suspect or suspects, but they had no available description other than a black male in a brown jacket.

A reverse 911 call was sent to area residents advising them that K-9 is in the area searching and if they see anyone suspicious to call 911.

Rangeview High School was briefly put on lockdown due to a basketball game being played there. The lockdown has since been lifted.
