Generous CBS4 Viewer To Donate Money Lost In Theft From DPS Athletic Program

By Jennifer Brice

DENVER (CBS4) – Thousands of dollars vanished from a Denver Public Schools athletics program. After CBS4's story aired Friday about the $4,000 theft, a viewer called the CBS4 newsroom wanting to donate that exact amount to the athletic program to cover the loss. It's a gesture that certainly restores faith in people.

Dr. Toby Derloshon knows a thing or two about making people smile. The pediatric dentist/orthodontist has been helping kids for 30 years at his Loveland office, but now it's the kids at Denver Public Schools who will be smiling because his generosity.

"You often hear about bad things happen and people need to know there's good in the world too," Derloshon said.

When Derloshon saw CBS4's story about $4,000 cash stolen from the athletic program with the Far Northeast Regional Division at DPS, he was inspired to help. The money was initially raised by athletes and parents, like one mom CBS4's Jennifer Brice spoke with, and wants to remain anonymous.

"It's a struggling community," said the mom upset over the theft. "People struggle to pay a $10 pay-to-play fee."

She says with the theft, it's the kids that get the short end of the stick.

Derloshon recently sold his Loveland practice and says he's got the extra cash to help. He plans to donate all $4,000.

"I don't know the school system but I was in athletics and I know what kids have to go through to accumulate equipment," he said.

As for the thief, police never found a suspect, but Derloshon has some good advice for the culprit.

"What goes around, comes around," he said. "Whoever took that money, I don't know they're going to be happy with that money. That's a temporary fix."
