Conifer Woman Killed In Police Shooting In California

EL CAJON, Calif. (CBS4)- A woman from Conifer was shot and killed by police in California and a man from Colorado remained behind bars in San Diego in connection with a police chase on Saturday.

The series of events leading up to the shooting death of Kelsey Rose Hauser, 25, of Conifer, and arrest of Geoffrey Hayden Sims, 34, began about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in El Cajon.

Sims was pulled over by police and Hauser was a passenger in his car along with two other men and a dog. Sims briefly pulled over but then drove off reaching speeds of up to 90 mph.

Officers with the El Cajon Police Department and the California Highway Patrol followed the vehicle until the driver, Sims, started speeding towards an officer. That officer started shooting at the vehicle in self defense, fatally wounding Hauser and the pit bull riding in the vehicle. Sims crashed into two patrol cars and was taken into custody.

At the time of the pursuit, both Sims and Hauser were wanted in Colorado on felony warrants. Sims failed to appear for a drug conviction sentencing. The same vehicle involved in the pursuit was reported stolen in Denver in August 2015.
