Contemporary Dance Sensation Plays One Night In Denver

By Libby Smith

DENVER (CBS4) - Shaping Sound is a contemporary dance show playing in Denver for one night only, and featuring a Colorado native.

Travis Wall is a co-creator of the dance troupe Shaping Sound. He says the project was born out of his work on the dance competition show "So You Think You Can Dance."

"It was kind of like, 'Why don't we do this every day?'" Wall told CBS4.

He says Shaping Sound is an extension of the various dance styles and musical genres you see on the television show, it includes contemporary dance, some contemporary ballet, alternative rock, and jazz dancing.

"We have a whole musical theater speakeasy section where we get to bring everything we trained our entire lives for to that one moment," Wall explained.

Shaping Sound started small in a club in Los Angeles in 2012, and now is in its third international tour.

"We wanted to create the space and create the stage where we could express ourselves, and dance the way we wanted to, and create the way we wanted to, and have an audience watch us do it," Wall said.

The show tells the story of a young woman as it moves through a wide variety of dance styles, and music genres.

"It's a full length two-hour show of just beautiful inspiring breath-taking dancers that really do take the audience into a dream world with them," said Mallauri Esquibel.

Esquibel is a Colorado native and a graduate of Highlands Ranch High School. She moved to Los Angeles when she was 17 and has an extensive career in theatre, movies and television.

"I'm really proud, and I owe a lot to this city, and to my family, and to my dance teachers and all that, so I'm excited to dance on the Denver stage tonight," Esquibel told CBS4.

Shaping Sound is at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts on January, 19th at 7:30. For tickets go to denvercenter.org or call 800.641.1222.
