Long Lines For Powerball Tickets Include Many From Overseas

FRISCO, Colo. (CBS4) - Excitement is building along with the jackpot for Wednesday night's massive Powerball drawing. The jackpot is an estimated $1.5 billion and CBS4's Matt Kroschel found a surprising group of people buying Powerball tickets in Frisco.

Tourists from overseas want to get in on the Powerball frenzy, and in resort towns like Frisco, it's only adding to the already long lines.

Inside the normally quiet Conoco on Main Street in Frisco it's been as busy as ever.

"It's ridiculous, somebody came in and bought $200 worth of tickets, all on separate tickets, it's crazy," clerk Kierra Hughes said.

Store clerks are getting a workout -- at least their fingers are. Joining the crowds lining up for their chance, be it a very small chance, to win, are visitors from overseas.

"They are pretty funny when they come in because they don't know how to play it, but they want to try win, you know," Hughes said.

It's because $1.5 billion sounds good in any language.

"We've had a lot of Russians come in, a couple Australians," Hughes said.

Powerball officials say winners don't have to be U.S. citizens to claim their prize, so alongside the millions watching the drawing Wednesday night maybe it will be someone from outside the U.S. who ends up with more than the they have ever imagined getting on their vacation in Colorado.
