Former Grand County Commissioner Sentenced For Embezzlement

HOT SULPHUR SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A former Grand County commissioner accused of embezzling thousands of dollars has been sentenced to 10 days in jail and two years of supervised probation.

James Newberry, who resigned in November and was sentenced Friday, also was ordered to complete 130 hours of community service and pay about $4,800 in restitution. He pleaded no contest to embezzlement of public property.

Prosecutors say Newberry double billed the county government for mileage reimbursements between 2009 and 2013. They filed a misdemeanor case in April based on evidence of duplicate billings for travel related to Newberry's work as the county's representative to the Colorado River Water District Board.

In September, prosecutors added felony charges when they discovered he submitted reimbursements for meetings he didn't attend at the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments.
