2 Killed In 4-Vehicle Crash That Began As Report Of Driver Asleep At The Wheel
DENVER (CBS4) - Two people were killed and six seriously injured after a four-vehicle crash at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Mexico Avenue in Denver Sunday afternoon.
The violent and deadly accident began at approximately 2:30 p.m. at Colorado and Evans, where firefighters were first called on reports of a person asleep in a car in traffic.
"When responders initially tried to talk to him, he sped off," said Luis Cedilla with the Denver Fire Department.
The black suburban raced north on Colorado Boulevard.
"And this black SUV just kept accelerating at a faster and faster speed. And then it hit one, and then it hit three," said Randi Doeker, who witnessed the crash.
CBS4's Jeff Todd spoke to the only person involved that wasn't injured, and he said he saw where it started a few blocks south of the crash site near Colorado and Evans.
"We were parked right next to the car here next to us. We could hear the Suburban coming. He had to have been going 80 miles per hour and then he slammed into that car and flipped that car," witness Chris Miller said.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene and another died at the hospital.
"We had a total of seven parties transported to the hospital. We had one party that was pronounced dead on scene, we have one party that was pronounced at the hospital," Tech. Tyrone Campbell with the Denver Police Department said.
A driver of a black SUV fled the scene right as paramedics arrived.
"Obviously we don't know what his mental state was or what caused him to leave that area, but we're investigating this as an accident until we determine that there are charges that are different," Campbell said.
Police aren't releasing much more information and charges have not been named, though there will likely be many.
