Blizzard May Slam Southern Rockies Creating Tough Holiday Travel South Of Denver

By Chris Spears

DENVER (CBS4) - Travel home after the Christmas holiday will likely become difficult if not impossible at times along I-25 south of Denver on Sunday.

That's because a blizzard is brewing that is forecast to hit the lee side of the southern Rockies and the southern plains.

A storm moving out of Arizona is expected to gain strength over New Mexico late Saturday and during the day on Sunday.

Based on the current forecast track, the greatest impacts in Colorado will be felt on the southeastern plains from Trinidad to Springfield, La Junta and Lamar.

Travel on Interstate 25 south of Denver could become an issue on Sunday between Pueblo and the New Mexico state line.

A combination of wind and heavy snow may create blizzard conditions on Raton Pass as the storm moves through.

At this time it looks like Denver will be too far north to receive major impacts from this storm other than some scattered snow showers Sunday night.

Colorado's Weather Center will continue to monitor the latest progress of this storm and will have updates during the newscasts at 5 and 10 p.m. on Saturday.
