Canine Companion Is The Best Medicine For 10-Year-Old

By Kathy Walsh

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (CBS4) - A 10-year-old from Centennial is a different boy this holiday season. His mother says he is healthier and happier than ever, thanks to a canine companion.

They were brought together two years ago because Patrick Kaplan suffers from a rare condition. The yellow lab, named Bindy, turned out to be just what the doctor ordered.

"She's awesome," Patrick told us.

He and Bindy are buddies, best friends. She's the best medicine he's ever had.

"She's my companion, everyday help. She just keeps me going," said Patrick.

Life for Patrick has been rocky since day one. He has anxiety and sensory processing issues. At 8 years old, he was diagnosed with a rare disorder called Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS).

"He gets really anxious and then he never really comes down from that until he gets sick," explained his mother, Denise Kaplan. "He could be sick for hours."

Denise learned about The Stink Bug Project, a nonprofit that pairs sick children with companion dogs. It was started in 2009 by cancer survivor Allison Winn who found great comfort in her dog, Coco. Bindy joined the Kaplans in 2013.

"She comforts him, but then she also comes and alerts us so we can get him what he needs before any of his episodes take place," said Denise.

According to his mother, Patrick's bouts of sickness have decreased and he's healthier than ever. And life has improved for Denise.

"Oh my gosh, I actually sleep at night," she said.

This time of year, the Kaplans are especially thankful for this lovable Lab who changed their lives. They consider Bindy a blessing for a sick boy and his entire family.

The Stink Bug Project is looking for eligible families to adopt companion dogs.
