Deadly Stabbing Suspect Will Face 2nd Degree Murder Charge

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- The University of Colorado student accused in a deadly stabbing will not face more severe charges as prosecutors had hoped.

Ian Scheuermann is suspected of stabbing Sean Hudson to death just after 2 a.m. Saturday at the northeast corner of Broadway and Walnut Street in downtown Boulder.

Scheuermann, 22, appeared in court on Thursday afternoon. He has said the stabbing was in self defense.

Prosecutors initially told the judge that the Boulder District Attorney's Office had considered raising the charge from second-degree murder to first-degree murder, that plan has been abandoned.

Catherine Olguin, a spokeswoman for the Boulder County District Attorney's Office, said prosecutors "can only charge him with what we can prove in court."

Prosecutors did add a charge against Scheuermann, one count of felony menacing for threatening Jeremy Zellers, a friend of Hudson who was there at the stabbing, with a knife.

Family of Hudson are seeking online donations to cover funeral costs and bring his body to Greenfield, Ind., where he was raised.
