1 Dead In Apartment Fire On York Street

DENVER (CBS4) - Firefighters responded to an apartment fire just after 5 a.m. Monday at 1355 York Street.

The source of the fire was a unit on the third floor of the apartment building where one person was found dead.

Thirty to 50 people were evacuated from the apartment due to carbon monoxide levels and other chemicals.

Damage to the rest of the building aside from the unit was minimal. Much of York Street was blocked off by fire trucks and working authorities.

The man's death has unnerved residents of the apartment complex.

"It was very creepy … when we went outside and I looked up to the third floor right next to my apartment and saw the flames … I just couldn't believe it," resident James Means said. "I just saw him yesterday … I can't believe he's gone."

Means said he knocked on his neighbor's door.

"I knocked on it several times and nobody answered, so I went downstairs," he said.

Other residents said they didn't hear any fire alarms go off and feel lucky that they got out alive.

"I just heard stomping and pounding and a lot of noise, and then the fire trucks came," another resident said.

Most of the residents have since been allowed to return to their apartments.
