Woman Who Owns SUV Stolen, Used In Police Pursuit

DENVER (CBS4)- A woman's SUV was stolen out of her garage on Thursday but she didn't know that the vehicle would be used in a police pursuit and crash with police cruisers. The vehicle may be the same SUV connected to several attempted carjackings.

"It was very, very scary," said Kimberly Thomas.

Thomas is the rightful owner of a silver Nissan Murano, the vehicle police believe was used to try to steal several other cars on Friday morning. One of those attempts ended in gunfire at a home near Utica and Alameda.

Before it was stolen, her SUV was involved in a crash.

"I thought there's no way, it's clearly a damaged car, there's no way they would take this," said Thomas.

The SUV was eventually spotted and police started a pursuit of the suspects around 1st Avenue and Knox Court that quickly made its way to Governor's Park.

"I looked behind me and there was a minivan and it looked like a police car was going to pull him over and then I realized they were both going about 70 mph," said Julie, a witness.

Police SUVs even took to the sidewalks to get around traffic to try to stop the suspect vehicle. The chase even went the wrong way down one way streets.

"Another police truck came another way and cornered him but he cut around and turned left and got away and then I saw about 10 more police cars," said Julie.

Two police cruisers were struck during the chase.

The passenger in the suspect vehicle jumped out near 6th and Washington. Police took him into custody at a nearby restaurant. The driver was taken into custody a few blocks away.

Police will conduct photo lineups to confirm whether the men in the stolen SUV are the same wanted in a string of attempted carjackings on Friday.
