School Bus Driver Charged After Crash Appears In Court
BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- A school bus driver appeared in court on Thursday after a crash that left students injured. Police say Elizabeth Burris admitted to having prescription medication in her system at the time of the rollover crash.
Burris was released on bond but appeared before a judge in Boulder County for a formal filing of the 17 charges against her that include felony counts of vehicular assault and child abuse.
Police said Burris lost control on Highway 7 about eight miles outside of Lyons on Monday night. The bus hit a mountainside and rolled over.
According to court documents, Burris, 39, told police she was on six different prescription medications. The investigator stated that Burris appeared to be drug impaired and did not perform voluntary roadside maneuvers as instructed.
In addition to Burris, who was injured, five students on board were taken to the hospital. Their ages range from 7 to 15, and two were described as having serious injuries.
The St. Vrain School District says Burris is not working right now. Her case goes back to court on Dec. 28.
