Police Believe Drivers 'Know They Hit Something' In Fatal Hit & Run On I-25

By Tom Mustin

DENVER (CBS4) - Interstate 25 slowed to a crawl early Wednesday morning after a deadly hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a motorcyclist.

"We can tell you he's an Hispanic male, 61 years of age, he is a Denver resident," said Denver Police Traffic Division Sgt. Mike Farr.

Around 4:30 a.m., the motorcyclist was hit by a semi-truck in the southbound lanes near Santa Fe Boulevard. Farr says the crash launched the motorcycle rider into the highway where he was run over by other vehicles.

"Multiple vehicles in fact. Our lone witness reports at least two and maybe three," Farr said.

Several witnesses stopped on the scene, but only one called police. Farr says the semi-truck driver might not be aware of the accident, but that's not the case with the other vehicles.

"That driver may not even know that he hit someone, but I have reason to believe those other vehicles do know that they hit someone or at least something."

The motorcycle driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Colleen Boyle has run T3RG Motorcycle Training Schools for 13 years. She says training is invaluable for riders, but sometimes even the best prepared cyclists are at the mercy of other vehicles on the road.

"There are lots of vulnerable vehicles out there. Motorcycles are at the top of the list for vulnerability. They don't get a second chance and it's a very sad thing," Boyle said.

Denver police have not released the victim's name. They still do not know what caused the crash, or if any charges will be filed. Right now they are looking for the drivers of a sedan and a box style delivery truck. The semi had a white cab with red lettering and a trailer with a cone shaped dumper.
