Driver Killed After Crashing Into Pond Near CU South Boulder Campus

By Melissa Garcia

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - Authorities have recovered the body of a man found dead in a Boulder pond.

The man was found inside his submerged vehicle just before 8 a.m. Sunday.

Officials believe the man was driving southbound on Foothills Parkway, approaching the on-ramp to Highway 36 near the University of Colorado campus.

"He came right through the trees," said Trooper Tim Sutherland of the Colorado State Patrol.

Crews pulled the Ford Taurus from the pond and searched underwater for additional victims.

Authorities said the driver somehow lost control of his car.

A passing jogger saw the vehicle in the water and called police. Rescue divers found the male driver dead inside.

"That water has a sheet of ice, as you can see, on it," said Sutherland. "It's very cold water. Not a place you want to be."

It was unknown exactly how long the man had been in the pond before being discovered.

The underwater search did not turn up anyone else besides the man found in his vehicle. His identity has not been released.
