Mission Running Low On Turkey Donations For Upcoming Holiday

DENVER (CBS4) - The Denver Rescue Mission is in desperate need of turkeys this holiday season. With just a few days left until Thanksgiving, the mission is still thousands behind its goal.

Volunteers and the Denver Rescue Mission spent Sunday giving out 2,500 Thanksgiving meals to Colorado families in need.

"We are loading sacks of potatoes, turkeys and canned goods," volunteer Tanner Rich said.

The families will get a home cooked meal this holiday.

"This lets them cook with their families and have a good meal," another volunteer said.

Others are at risk of having nothing.

"If we don't reach our goal of 15,000 there will be some groups that don't get their turkeys," Alexxa Gagner with the Denver Rescue Mission said.

The mission is about 4,000 turkeys short of its thanksgiving goal.

"A lot of families who are living in poverty may have to decide between paying their rent one month and buying food," Gagner said.

The mission hopes as generous families begin preparations for their own Thanksgiving meals they'll take a minute to think of those less fortunate and pick up an extra turkey.
