Holiday Shopping Trends Changing Across Colorado

By Suzanne McCarroll

DENVER (CBS4)- Holiday shopping trends may be changing this year. Colorado's Retail Council says some of the state's retailers are backing off from opening on the Thanksgiving holiday, while others are reducing the hours they're open.

Earlier this fall, REI announced it would be closed both Thanksgiving and the day after. The announcement received massive amounts of publicity.

Now it seems some other retailers are following REI's lead.

"It's been great to be kind of a leader in the movement " says REI's General Manager, Pete Citrano.

He says other sports chains around the country have contacted him and are also deciding to close their doors for a day or two this Thanksgiving holiday.

While many consumers will still flock to shop on Thanksgiving and the day after, some are thankful retailers are cutting back and giving employees time off.

"I'm not heartbroken at all, I think it's kind of tacky to be open on Thanksgiving Day anyway," said one downtown shopper.
