Home Invasion, Robbery Suspect Leads Officers On 2 Chases Before Shootout Death

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4)- A home invasion/robbery suspect led authorities on two different chases 12 hours apart before he was captured and then shot by officers.

Multiple agencies were involved in the second chase of a robbery suspect that began in Longmont Tuesday night. It ended on Highway 85 just north of Platteville, where the driver displayed a firearm and officers fired shots in response.

The driver, an adult male and the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the same suspect wanted in an armed robbery and assault that happened at a home in the 4200 block of Sunshine Canyon in unincorporated Boulder County about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said two male suspects entered the home and at least one had a handgun. They demanded marijuana from the 45-year-old resident but when he did not comply one of the suspects fired the gun into the couch. The victim was assaulted with the weapon, or pistol whipped, but was not shot.

"They demanded marijuana and when he didn't give it, they fired around at his couch, stolen the marijuana and beat him with the gun," said Boulder County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Heidi Prentup.

Officers found the victim with non-life threatening injuries at the home. He was taken to the hospital and expected to recover.

The suspects took an unknown quantity of marijuana and drove away from the home. They were last seen on Highway 128 near Interlocken.

The Colorado State Patrol, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, and Boulder police all pursued the suspect until they got to Broomfield where the pursuit was called off due to dangerous driving conditions.

One of the suspects was identified by the license plate on the vehicle. Detectives went to a residence in Adams County to execute the search warrant. They seized the vehicle wanted in the Boulder County robbery but did not find the suspects.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Longmont police pulled over a driver for a traffic stop on a different vehicle, which they believed contained one of the suspects. The driver failed to yield and the second pursuit began.

"Tried to stop that vehicle, another pursuit ensued which went into Adams county and terminated in Brighton where there was a gunfight," said Prentup.

The pursuit ended in the 14800 block of Highway 85 in Brighton where the suspect was shot and killed. It is unclear which agency fired the fatal shot.

The Adams County Critical Incident Team was deployed to the scene and investigation continued through the night.

The suspect who was shot has not been identified. Investigators are looking to identify the second suspect involved in the robbery and home invasion.
