6 Homes Evacuated, School Closed Due To Unknown Chemicals

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4)- An elementary school in Thornton remained closed on Tuesday and six homes were evacuated after the discovery of unknown chemicals.

Hazardous materials crews were inside a home near 135th and Fillmore in Thornton after chemicals were discovered inside on Monday, including a small quantity of illegal substances.

The discovery forced the early dismissal of Tarver Elementary School on Monday. The school remained closed on Tuesday.

The families evacuated from their homes on Monday were allowed to return Monday night but then evacuated again Tuesday morning when investigators returned to the home in question.

The FBI, ATF, Adams County Bomb Disposal Unit, Thornton Fire and Tri-County Health were at the home investigating the chemicals found. Agents were analyzing chemicals and testing them inside a bedroom closet.

Once the testing was completed investigators turned the home over to family members. Residents were also able to return to the six neighboring homes.

"Well you're talking about a lot of unknown chemicals so until you identify what those substances are and what their potential is in regards to health or safety matters, we just want to make sure that we've properly identified them and rendered them safe," said Thornton Police spokesman Matt Barnes.

Investigators confirm that the discovery is related to an explosion and suicide at the home.

The following letter was sent to parents of students at Tarver Elementary on Monday night:

Dear Tarver families:

I want to update you concerning the situation in the neighborhood surrounding the school.

Thank you for your patience and support of our reunification process at the Educational Support Center today.

Thornton Police have an ongoing investigation at a house near the school in which they are dealing with chemicals. Their work at the house will extend into tomorrow.

Given This And The Need To Keep People Out Of The Area As A Precaution, We Will NOT Have School Tomorrow. Again, Tarver Elementary Will Be Closed Tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 10. Remember Also That There Is No School Wednesday In Honor Of Veterans Day. Classes Will Resume On Thursday, Nov. 12.

Thank you again for your support. Our partnership between students, parents, staff and law enforcement is key to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment.

Sincerely,
Chris Trujillo
