Students Learn Dos, Don'ts Of Texting, Online Chatting

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4)- Students at Landmark Academy in Commerce City got an important lesson about cyber safety on Tuesday.

The education program teaches students the dos and don'ts of texting and online chatting.

Authorities believe safety classes that focus on what is appropriate with social media and cellphone communication gives kids a chance to speak up.

"You never know what kid is sitting right on the fence, possibly about to make a mistake, so when you can hit 300-400 kids at one time, that's way more than any one arrest we can do and it's more of an impact for our kids and our community," said Michael Harris with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.

Harris said the child sex offender unit in Jefferson County averages 55 arrests a year.
