Worker Injured In Crane Collapse At 'The Source' Released From Hospital

DENVER (CBS4) - A construction worker who was injured after a crane collapsed Wednesday morning at a popular food market in Denver has been released from the hospital.

The collapse happened in the 3300 block of Brighton Boulevard in Denver at approximately 8:30 a.m. The crane's arm collapsed over a parking garage under construction at The Source marketplace and left a big hole in the roof.

The collapse forced the evacuation of two nearby buildings and kept The Source closed all day Wednesday.

"The construction team has worked hard to get the collapsed crane off The Source building. As soon as that process is completed this morning, we expect a city inspector to walk through the building and sign off on reopening to the public," The Source management said in a statement Thursday morning.

Management said the marketplace will remained close for breakfast and lunch but they expect to be back open for dinner Thursday evening.

"Thank you for your patience and support. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused," management said.

What caused the crane to collapse is being investigated but when crews lifted the crane, the ground gave way.

"It's the ground under the building and all of that is what's going to be under investigation but there does appear to be some void space under where the crane was working. What exactly that void space is … is unknown at this time," said Denver Fire spokeswoman Melissa Taylor.

One person was injured and taken away in an ambulance on a stretcher. The person injured was working on top of the garage when the crane collapsed.

"The worker who was injured during the incident was released from the hospital yesterday," The Source management said.

The injured worker has not been identified.

The construction company working on the parking garage is Brinkman Construction.

The building has minimal damage but will need to be evaluated for structural damage. The crane missed the building's water line by inches which could have created a big mess.

Copter4 flew over the collapse on Wednesday morning where northbound Brighton Boulevard at 31st Street was closed for a while.
