Wild Costumes Join Wild Animals For 'Boo At The Zoo'

DENVER (CBS4)- Lions, monsters and aliens joined the real wild animals at the Denver Zoo on Saturday for Boo at the Zoo.

The annual event runs two weekends this year, Oct. 24, 25 and Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

"I'm a monster and this is my little monster," said one mom in costume.

The event features 25 trick-or-treat stations where costumed children can get treats.

And there's the annual pumpkin smash. On Saturday, 51-year-old Dolly made quick work of the 450 pound pumpkin.

"She knows something good is going on. If you saw, she really sped up and moved pretty quickly to the pumpkin," said Denver Zoo spokesman Matthew Lenyo.

Zoo workers fill the pumpkin with special treats for the elephant matriarch every year.

"Different types of produce, romaine lettuce, things that she really likes," said Lenyo.

This year, visitors get to see something a little different, LEGO sculptures.

Initially nearly three dozen LEGO brick sculptures were added as part of the "Nature Connects, Art With LEGO Bricks" exhibit at the zoo. Some were created especially for the Denver Zoo.

This week, five scary bats and the spider are part of the spooky-themed decorations that turn the zoo into the perfect place for safe family Halloween fun.

Zoo workers hope in addition to the treats, kids will also learn about the animals.

"That's one of the great things about Boo at the Zoo, is during these fall months it's a great time for families to come out and be together and have the opportunity to do some learning and have some fun as well," said Lenyo.

Boo at the Zoo is free with regular zoo admission. There will also be a Boo at the Zoo After Dark on Halloween weekend.
