Trains Begin Rolling To DIA April 22, 2016

DENVER (CBS4)- RTD has released its start date for rail service to Denver International Airport: April 22, 2016.

The RTD University of Colorado A Line will carry passengers from Union Station in downtown Denver to DIA on commuter rail in just 37 minutes. The cost of the train to DIA is $9 regardless of where travelers board.

The line takes its name from the sponsorship through RTD's naming rights program.

The line is comprised of 23 miles of new electric commuter rail. The rail cars will be the first of its kind in Denver. The cars are faster than light rail with a top speed of 79 miles an hour and carry more people than light rail vehicles.

"This project has been made possible through regional collaboration. None of this could have happened without the cooperation and teamwork from our partners who have worked tirelessly to deliver a quality project that will take public transit in the Denver metro area to the next level," RTD Board Chair Chuck Sisk said in a statement. "We are also very proud of our naming rights partnership with the University of Colorado."

The rail line will serve eight stations including Denver Union Station and the new Denver Airport Station located at the south terminal at DIA, which serves travelers and guests of the new Westin Denver International Airport Hotel.
