Shooting Took Place After Middle Of Night Confrontation, Search On For Suspect

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - Lakewood police have identified a man who is suspected of shooting a woman early Monday morning near West 2nd Avenue and Reed Street.

Late in the morning police searched a home for the suspect but he wasn't inside.

The man has been identified as Arthur James Gutknecht, 30. He is wanted on charges of attempted first-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

A woman was shot just before 4 a.m. after she was approached by a man and a woman.

"There is a male with another female, they are neighbors of the victim. Apparently the suspect male and suspect female went over to the victim's house, there was some sort of confrontation over property that one of them felt like one or the other owed them," Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis said.

Police say the woman was shot in the neck but the injury is not life threatening.

A SWAT team surrounded and entered the suspect's home around noon but he wasn't inside. Gutknecht reportedly lives in the home with his mother.

Lindy Hargrove lives near the area and could hear it all unfold.

"I heard a gunshot next door and there was a guy screaming, 'Call the cops, she's been shot in the neck.' And a girl screaming for help, and then I heard a motorcycle take off," Hargrove said.

So far police haven't released a photo of Gutknecht for line-up reasons. He's described as a white male, 5-foot-9, 140 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. Anyone who knows his whereabouts is asked to call 911.

The victim's name hasn't been released.
