Colorado Red Cross Volunteers Head To Help Flood Victims In South Carolina

DENVER (CBS4) - The Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross is sending local volunteers to help with flood relief in South Carolina.

People in many areas of that state are still recovering from the flooding and severe weather that happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Joaquin.

Christina Eyre is one of three Red Cross volunteers who will be traveling to the city of Columbia to help.

"Whether it's insurance forms, whether it's finding a place to live," said Eyre, who is now in her seventh deployment with the Red Cross. "There's still people living in shelters. … The situation is pretty serious."

Since the historic storm began two weeks ago more than 20 people have been killed, 27 seven dams have failed and more than 300 roads and bridges remain closed.

"I'll be heading up a team of caseworkers whose job it is to help people navigate all of the issues and paperwork that is associated with a disaster response," Eyre told CBS4.

As damage estimates climb in to the millions, Red Cross workers hope to help the families affected, both through immediate food and shelter and long term help.

Eyre hopes during her two week stay she can make a difference in getting the people of South Carolina back on their feet.
