Del Monte Recalls Granny Smith Apples Due To Possible Listeria Contamination

DENVER (CBS4) - The Colorado Department of Health and Environment has announced a recall of fresh Granny Smith apples due to possible listeria contamination.

According to the department of health, the apples come from Del Monte Fresh Produce, Inc. and are packaged in 8-count boxes and 6-count clear plastic bags.

The apples were only sold to Coremark and 7-Eleven convenience stores in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming between the dates of Oct. 1-12.

Listeria is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and others with weakened immune systems.

No illnesses have been reported so far.

"Consumers who suspect that they have purchased Granny Smith green apples affected by this recall should dispose it in the garbage and contact Del Monte Fresh Produce for a refund. Affected retailers have been requested to remove the product from sale," The Food and Drug Administration said on its website.
