Feeling Stressed Out? Go Wash Some Dishes

If your stress level is through the roof, you might think that some yoga or meditation may deflate some of the anxiety eating at your soul. But some new research suggests a few minutes at the kitchen sink may be just what the doctor ordered.

The research comes from Florida State University, and looks at people who just said no to the dishwasher, and yes to some elbow grease with the dishes.

It seems that some quality time washing dishes by hand can go a long way in lowering high -- or even not so high -- levels of anxiety.

Admittedly it was a small study, just 51 people. But the results were pretty striking. Those who got their hands in the water reported a significant drop in how anxious they felt before scrubbing those pots and pans.

But the key was not wish-washing absentmindedly .. taking your mind off your worries and taking a mental trip to your "happy place."

Instead, the stressbusters practiced "mindfulness." Meaning they really got into the emotions and thoughts of the moment.

In non-psychological speak, they concentrated on the warmth of water. Enjoyed the fragrance of the soap. And absorbed in the sensation and texture of the water. And after a sink session: anxiety down. Stress down. Mood up.

Mindfulness is nothing new, but it's really been lately that it's more commonly spoken about as a tool for mental health.

Now I admit, I'm a vacuum guy. Meaning, I really love doing it. No need to think; no outside noise besides the hum of the machine; plus some tangible results of sucked up dirt.

Yet that's mindless ... which I suppose is okay, too. Plus we get cleaner carpets out of the deal as well.

But if you're looking for a bit more, maybe a healthy addition to the stress-busting regimen of life is a trip to the sink.

Remember, though, live in the moment no matter what you choose.
