Teen Killed In Crash After Police Pursuit

GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4)- A teenager was killed in a crash Friday night that happened when a suspect tried to run from police.

The Weld County Coroner said that the victim was 17-year-old Riley David Young of Strasburg. Young was in his last year at Strasburg High School. His friends told CBS4 he was a big fan of basketball and played on the team at school.

Police in Greeley say they tried to pull over the driver of a silver Dodge Durango in the 800 block of 8th Avenue about 8:13 p.m. Friday for a traffic violation.

The driver, identified as Wyatt Nykamp, didn't stop and sped away from police. The officer didn't follow but pulled off onto a side street.

Nykamp, 34, continued to speed eastbound on 8th Street from 8th Avenue. About four minutes later there was a crash at Highway 85 and 8th Street involving the suspect vehicle and a red Dodge Stratus that was traveling northbound in Hwy. 85.

Police rushed to the crash where the driver of the Dodge Stratus, Young, was pronounced deceased by paramedics. The passenger of that vehicle was extricated and rushed to North Colorado Medical Center in critical condition.

Nykamp was ejected when the vehicle rolled multiple times. He was found in a field northeast of the intersection and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses told police the driver of Dodge Durango was speeding about 80 mph just prior to the crash. The investigation continues and possible charges are being considered.

One of Young's friends told CBS4 that Young was driving while his father, James Scott Young, 43 was in the passenger seat when the speeding car crashed into them.
