Search For Burglar Ends With Police Impersonator Searching Victim's Home

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4)- A bizarre situation involving two men, one a burglar and the other a police impersonator, after a strange encounter in Fort Collins.

Police say one of the men broke into a woman's home and the second one posed as a police officer and took a report from the victim. But the man wasn't a police officer.

It started shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday when a man broke into the victim's home. Shortly after, another man who posed as a police officer showed up at her front door.

"Did a walk-through with her through the home, appeared to conduct a police report and then left," said Fort Collins Police spokeswoman Kate Kimble.

Kimble said when the victim called police to follow up on the report, she found out that an officer had not been dispatched to her home.

"We are unsure if those two subjects are related to each other or what the circumstances are surrounding that impersonation," said Kimble.

Residents are on edge after hearing about the police impersonator.

"That's very scary. Police impersonation is a very, very serious crime and it needs to be stopped," said Fort Collins resident Bob Wall.

The break-in suspect was described as being white and between 30 and 35 years old. He was between 6 foot and 6-foot-2 and head a medium build, short hair and weighed between 170 and 180 pounds.

The alleged police impersonator was described as being a white male with black hair and blue eyes. He was between 35 and 40, 5-foot-8 and he had a stocky build.

Police have not stated the location of the home where the incident was reported.
