Arrest Made In Connection With Hit & Run Of Jogger In Highlands Ranch

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4) - Deputies in Douglas County have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run that seriously injured a jogger on a sidewalk in Highlands Ranch early Tuesday morning.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Markus Lide, 32, of Highlands Ranch was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon. He's facing a single felony charge of accident resulting in serious bodily injury. Other possible charges could be brought later.

Deputies say Tina Benner, 50, was jogging about 6:35 a.m. Tuesday on the sidewalk in the area of South University Boulevard near Crossland Way in Highlands Ranch when she was struck by a vehicle.

"It looks like a person was driving a vehicle, jumped the curb, hit a jogger who was on the sidewalk on the south side of South University," Douglas County Sheriff Sgt. Lori Bronner said on Tuesday.

The driver did not stop and drove away, leaving Benner with serious injuries. She remains in critical condition but is aware of the arrest.

According to the sheriff's office, they had several tips in the case but Lide contacted an attorney to negotiate his arrest.

"That's one thing I want to make clear -- we have this guy in custody and we are confident that this is the individual that commit this act," Sheriff Tony Spurlocks said at a news conference.

Investigators examined vehicle parts left at the scene to compile a suspect vehicle description. The sheriff's office is now in possession of Lide's vehicle, a 2010 red Infinity sedan. Investigators are waiting on a search warrant to process the vehicle.
