Denver Mother's Invention Reminds Parents Not To Leave Kids In Hot Cars

DENVER (CBS4) - With three young boys and another baby on the way, Denver mother Julie Hodges knows the ins and outs of child care, particularly car seats.

"It's not something that people really want to talk about," Hodges said.

Every year on average 38 children die after being left in hot cars. After learning some of these startling statistics from websites like Kidsandcars.org, Hodges decided to take action.

"You're always looking between the steering wheel and the road," Hodges said of her wheel cover idea.

She put together a wheel cover, embroidered with sayings that remind drivers to check the back seat.

"'Car seat occupied,' 'Don't part without your heart,'" Hodges said of the sayings.

Some car seat reminders can get expensive, but on Hodge's Kickstarter page they are offered for $15.

"There are so many different distractions that parents have that it's easy for them to make mistakes," Hodges said.
