'Pop Up' Bike Lane Encourages Cycling, Drivers To Share Road

DENVER (CBS4)- A pop up bike lane made a three day appearance along a heavily-traveled section of Broadway through downtown to test an idea that could demonstrate the future of commuting in Denver.

The pop up bike lane was installed between Bayaud and First Avenue on Friday. It will remain there through Sunday.

"A pop up bike lane is an opportunity for city staff to take a lane of traffic and install temporarily a bike lane to show what it might look like in the future," said Bike Denver spokeswoman Molly North.

Cyclists who tried it out on Friday are enthusiastic, "Great idea!"

"Come ride your bikes, come walk it, come drive it-- not the lane but next to it-- and come experience this corridor with the popup bike lane and see how it affects your experience," said North.

The City of Denver needs the feedback of commuters, those who drive and those who cycle to see if drivers and bikers can coexist along the stretch.

"We already know a lot of cycling commuters and recreationalists use this corridor so for a weekend to test this out to see how it performs, see how it feels, I think it's a great idea," said one cyclist.
