10 Notable Week 2 Performances From Around The NFL

Team of the Week: Pittsburgh Steelers

No one bothered to tell the San Francisco 49ers that they had a game Sunday. If they had, it wouldn't have mattered because the Steelers came to play. Big Ben and the Men of Steel rolled to a 43-18 win. Antonio Brown had his way with the Niners' defense, catching nine passes for 195 yards and a touchdown. Expect another huge game next week when Brown and the Steelers meet up with the lackluster St. Louis Rams.

Player of the Week: Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers

Rodgers doesn't win player of the week for his numbers (25-for-33, 249 yds., 2 TDs), he wins for his ability to make otherwise pedestrian players look like superstars. Randle Cobb, James Jones, and James Starks all looked great in the 2014 NFC Championship Game rematch against the Seahawks, and that's thanks to the play of Rodgers. He may not be the Player of the Year so far, but with performances like this the rest of the year, Rodgers will be.

Rookie of the Week: Matt Jones, RB, Washington Redskins
Jones had 19 carries, 123 yards, and two touchdowns against the Rams. Not bad any week, but when you consider the man has played exactly two NFL games, that makes Sunday's performance almost otherworldly. The Redskins play the Giants on Thursday Night, and the Giants run defense has been spectacularly awful thus far in 2015, so a repeat performance could be something to watch for.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Stephen Gostkowski, K, New England Patriots
Gostkowski nailed four field goals and four extra points. He contributed 16 points to the Patriots win over the Buffalo Bills. The Pats only won by eight points, so without Gostkowski's accuracy, the Patriots would have left Buffalo a lot unhappier than they did.

Derek Carr

Offense of the Week: Oakland Raiders
Where in the world did the Raiders come from on Sunday? They beat the Ravens 37-33 in a nailbiter that came down to the wire. Quarterback Derek Carr was 30-for-46 for 351 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Amari Cooper was spectacular in his second career NFL game (7 catches, 109 yards, and 1 touchdown), and Latavius Murray contributed 5 yards on the ground and added a score. If the Raiders keep this up, the AFC West landscape could change quickly.

Defense of the Week: Dallas Cowboys
In an otherwise awful football game, the Cowboys defense was outstanding. Sean Lee is finally back to the form he was at before injuries shut down most of the past two years for him. Barry Church and Brandon Carr have locked down the backfield, an area where the Cowboys have definitely struggled in the past few seasons. If the defense keeps up the level of play they were at against the Eagles on Sunday, the team may not have to worry as much about the losses of Tony Romo and Dez Bryant.

Offensive MVP: Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots
He threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns against a pretty good Bills defense. You really don't need much more than that. Brady, love him or hate him, is on track to have a season for the ages, and at age 39, has been showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Offensive LVP: DeMarco Murray, RB, Philadelphia Eagles
DeMarco Murray had two rushing yards from scrimmage on 13 attempts. Nearly a dozen starting quarterbacks had more last weekend. Chalk it up to stout Cowboys defensive line, or a "Curse of 370," but either way, it's time to worry about DeMarco Murray this year.

Defensive MVP: Bradley Roby, CB, Denver Broncos
Roby pretty much sealed this award when he picked up Jamaal Charles' fumble with 30 seconds left and ran it into the endzone on Thursday night. That gave the Broncos the win in Kansas City in a finis for the ages. Just when you think Denver's defense couldn't get any better, they step up and make a play like that, showing that they absolutely can get better. Watching them the rest of this season is going to be so much fun.

Defensive LVP: Byron Maxwell, DB, Philadelphia Eagles
It's tough to choose just one here, considering the Giants, Bears, Niners, and Eagles all had horrendous weeks. Byron Maxwell is our winner this week, though. Watching an otherwise awful game was worse for Eagles fans who had their hopes set on Maxwell to stop the Cowboys' passing game. He got beat all afternoon, even after Tony Romo left the game with a broken collarbone. Next week, the Eagles visit the Jets. Ryan Fitzpatrick showed on Monday Night that he's playing exceptionally well, and if the Jets are smart, they'll come after Maxwell all day long.
