Human Death Related To West Nile Virus Reported In Pueblo County

PUEBLO, Colo. (CBS4) - A person has died from the West Nile virus in Pueblo County.

The Pueblo City-County Health Department announced the adult's death on Thursday.

"The first human death related to West Nile virus has been identified in Pueblo County," Public Health Director Sylvia Proud said in a statement. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family."

The person's identity hasn't been released.

According to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment, as of Sept. 11 there have been 61 reported cases human West Nile virus infections and one person has died. It's not clear if the death in Pueblo County is that reported death or if another person previously died.

"West Nile virus develops in the human body within 5-14 days after a bite from an infected mosquito. All forms of West Nile virus can be serious including fever, meningitis and encephalitis, and have potential for causing long-term illness and disability," Pueblo City-County Health said in a statement.

Larimer County says they're now publishing online test results of mosquito traps so that residents can see if mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile in their neighborhoods.
