Nebraska Man Charged In Deadly 5-Car Pileup On I-76

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Brighton arrested a man believed to have started a chain of accidents on Interstate 76 that left one person dead.

Conner Maurer of Minatare, Neb. has been charged with careless driving causing death. Maurer, 22, remains in custody at the Adams County Detention Facility.

About 4:30 p.m. Monday, police were called to reports of a semi which was unable to continue under the Bridge Street overpass and became lodged underneath which caused eastbound traffic to stop. Police began diverting traffic off I-76 at the Bromley Lane exit.

About 25 minutes later, a black 2014 Jeep Rubicon that was pulling a flatbed trailer struck a white Toyota sedan which was stopped. Maurer was driving the Jeep.

The Toyota then struck a grey Hyundai sedan. The trailer being pulled by the Jeep became detached and struck the Hyundai and a white Chrysler passenger van.

The driver of the Toyota, an adult female, was killed. Her identity has not been released.
