Broncos Scale Back Usual Routine With Little Time To Prepare For Chiefs

It's a short week for the Denver Broncos this week. CBS4 will broadcast the clash between divisional rivals this Thursday night, as the (1-0) Broncos travel to Kansas City to face the (1-0) Chiefs.

Primetime games are a rite a passage for the Mile High team. Thursday night's game is the first of five early evening contests scheduled for this season.

In preparation the Broncos will scale back their usual routine. The players will practice in the evening. This will allow the team to maximize their energy by sleeping in and acclimating their internal clocks to the night time kickoff.

Offensive guard Evan Mathis welcomes the change.

"It allows you to put a lot more emphasis on the mental aspect of the game because you're going to back off physically. You're going to not do as much pounding because you have to focus on recovering from Sunday's game," Mathis said. "If you're able to put all of your work into the mental aspect of the game, it's ample time to have a solid game plan and know everything about your opponent by Thursday."

Sunday's physical game against the Baltimore Ravens has left a few Broncos dinged up. Hopefully those players -- notably C.J. Anderson, Malik Jackson, and Demaryius Thomas will be ready to go in time for Thursday. One player, safety T.J. Ward, returns from suspension. A well-rested Ward will provide an extra boost to the defense.

"I'm just happy to be back and ready to go," Ward said.
