Overnight Lane Closures On I-25 For Next Month To Repair Bridges

DENVER (CBS4)- A semi driver who caused damage to several bridges along Interstate 25 last month is the reason behind lane closures along that stretch while crews make repairs.

Police say Michael Stollsteimer continued driving after hitting the bridges Aug. 27, causing traffic delays on the highway. Police cited Stollsteimer, 51, with careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

The Colorado Department of Transportation began nightly lane closures on Tuesday night on I-25 between Colfax Avenue and 20th Street to accommodate repairs on the Speer Boulevard and 23rd Avenue bridges over the interstate.

The restrictions include single, double and triple lane closures. Single lane closures begin at 7 p.m., double lane closures begin at 10 p.m. and triple lane closures begin at 11 p.m. One lane of traffic will remain open at all times.

Speeds will remain at 55 mph with intermittent nightly closures expected to continue Sundays through Thursdays for approximately four weeks.

"I-25 is one of our busiest highways, and we know lane restrictions can cause impacts to drivers," said Paul Jesaitis, CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director, in a statement. "However, this work is critical for safety and maintaining our bridges, and we will do all we can to get the lanes open as quickly as possible."

CDOT says the repairs will ultimately expand the Speer Boulevard and 23rd Avenue bridge lifespan.
