Somber Back-To-School Day At Summit High After Student's Drowning

FRISCO, Colo. (CBS4) - Monday was the first day back to school for students at Summit High School, but it was not a happy day following this weekend's tragic drowning death of 16-year-old Jefte Flores.

Grievance councilors were on hand for students and staff inside the school Monday. Flores was a popular student who played soccer. He died Saturday when a ball went into Green Mountain Reservoir and he swam out to get it.

Dozens of people watched from the banks of the reservoir helplessly as Flores began struggling in the frigid water about 30 feet from shore. CBS4 has learned many of the people didn't know how to swim.

Family members told CBS4 the victim's father jumped into the water to try to rescue his son, but couldn't reach him before he went under.

The family was at the reservoir to help celebrate a baptism ceremony with members from their church.

Students brought flowers and cards to school on their first day back.

"Very sensitive to kids and families and our school district staff who suffer as well when these things happen as well," a school councilor said. "One of the things about grief is people do it in their own way, at their own pace; and so we're trying to allow for that individuality."

Funeral arrangements are being made now and a fund has been established to help cover the cost. Those who wish to contribute to the fund can visit any Alpine Bank and donate to an account in the name of "Jepte Flores and Flores Family."
