New Metal Detectors At Broncos Games To Increase Flow Of Fans

DENVER (CBS4) - Sports Authority Field at Mile High is getting ready for the Denver Broncos' first preseason game and has installed just under 100 metal detectors, and they aren't the only changes happening at the stadium.

The metal detectors replace the hand wand and pat-down systems. Unlike airport security checkpoints, fans won't need to remove shoes, belts or wallets. Stadium officials say fans asked for the metal detectors and more food options.

"The reason that we're really going to this technology is ... one, to increase the security of the building and the safety of our fans when they're here. And the second reason is to increase the flow of people being able to come through the building," Stadium Management Company Assistant General Manager Scott Bliek said.

The stadium is also updating its concessions with 10 new food options and moving fan favorites to more convenient locations, including more options on the fifth level.

"We've got three new burgers," Executive Chef Christopher DeJohn said.

There are also fried chicken bread cones.

"We are in a snacking kind of industry so that's kind of why I thought of that," DeJohn said.

Italian nachos and custom cocktails like the Mile High Mule are also new.

"In the old days it was all about hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn," General Manager Jay Roberts said. "Fans like coming to a lot of games, they like to have different things, they like to try new things."

The changes are all in response to fan surveys. As stadium staff say just as the competition on the field is fierce, the stadium is also competing to be the best.

"That is our goal. The Broncos' goal to have the best game-day experience in all of football," Roberts said.

The cost of the metal detectors was covered by the building. All the changes should be in place and available by the Broncos' first preseason home game this Saturday.
