Firefighters Stop Spread Of Over 30 Blazes In Colorado
CRAIG, Colo. (AP) — Firefighters have been able to stop the spread of over 30 fires sparked by lightning strikes in northwestern Colorado in recent days despite stretched resources.
Only two of the 34 blazes were still burning with partial containment Tuesday near Meeker.
The largest of the fires sparked between Saturday and Monday, the 1,026-acre Four Mile Fire, was contained Monday. Regional fire spokeswoman Lynn Barclay says it forced the evacuation of a ranch house but crews were able to save the building.
With one of the region's 10 fire engines fighting fires in Idaho, Barclay said two Bureau of Land Management engines from Grand Junction and Wyoming were sent to northwestern Colorado. The state's new wildfire tanker and both of Colorado's inmate firefighting crews were also called in to help.
